The Phonograph in Court

It is generally agreed that the phonograph was invented by Thomas Alva Edison in 1877. This invention was closely linked to the developments of telephony and telegraphy; one of the motivations of Edison and his collaborators was to succeed at recording telephonic messages. Thus the phonograph was first associated with the spoken voice. In one of the first notes recorded by Edison about his invention, we read that “the spkg vibrations are indented nicely & theres no doubt that I shall be able to store & reproduce automatically at any future time the human voice perfectly.”¹⁵
